James Colson Baker was depressed and was unemployed when Sonia Alane, his mother was divorced from the Baker family at only 9 years old. Baker and his father relocated to Denver, where they lived at the house of his dad's aunt. Baker was subject to bullying since he lived in poverty by the other kids. His compositions are known as a blend of modern hip-hop and rock with alternative rock. Baker had released four mixtapes between 2007 and the year 2010 prior to signing with Bad Boy Records. The Cleveland rapper who penned lyrics with the velocity of a bullet speeding through the air experienced an explosive rise when, in 2011, he made the switch from self-released mixtapes to established labels. Then, his fame was on the rise as each albums charted inside the top 10.
